Open Doors 2015: 25,26,27 September
Coming weekend (25,26,27 September) the Old Town will again be the scene of 'Open Doors', the Rhodes version of the European Heritage Days. Open Doors is an annual festival of cultural heritage and has been held in Rhodes every year since 2010. You can visit many historical buildings and locations, most of them normally not open for the public, all for free. Maps are available at all locations, providing you with information in both English and Greek. This year's theme is: Under Siege - The Great Walls & Fortifications of Rhodes.
Program
Friday 25, 19:00 in St. George's bastion; Official opening of Open Doors 2015 with a speech (in Greek) by Dr. Katerina Manousou- Della about the history and restoration of the walls of Rhodes, followed by a reception. All welcome.
Saturday & Sunday 26 and 27, 11:00 - 18:00.
The following participating locations will open their doors:
1. Fortress of St. Nicholas
2. Amboise Gate
3. Walk on the Walls
4. The Moat
5. St. George's bastion (Info Center)
6. Bastion of Fabrizio del Carretto
7. Mole of the Windmills
8. Former tower of Naillac
Under Siege: the Great Walls & Fortifications of Rhodes
The theme highlights the great historical and architectural importance of the fortifications of our old town. Like in all previous years, several buildings that normally remain closed to the public, will open their doors for this special occasion. Next to that, also locations that are normally open for the public, will participate. The combination of the two, connected by the thematic approach, provides a unique opportunity for locals and tourists to explore the walls and fortifications of Rhodes as one of the world’s most impressive monuments of military architecture and will enable them to understand and appreciate the history, character and importance of the defensive system as a comprehensive whole.
Support
Anoiktes Portes 2015 has not received any public funding. It is only thanks to our volunteers, the Friends of RICHeS and the generous and loyal support of a few culture-minded, private companies that this event, the most popular cultural heritage event in Rhodes, can still be held. On behalf of the thousands of visitors we expect this year again, the board of RICHeS wishes to express our gratitude to, in alphabetical order:
Agnogal
Apollo Beach Hotel/Sentido
Apollo Blue Hotel/Sentido
Electra Palace Hotel
Kounakis Jewels & Watches
Kozas Seafood Taverna, Stegna
Mama Sofia Restaurant
S. Nikolis Boutique Hotel & Apartments
Ostria Beach Bar Restaurant, Kalathos
Blue Bay Platinum Hotel, Marmaris
Roubeti Uomo
The board of RICHeS also expresses thanks and appreciation for the Ministry of Culture - Ephorate of Antiquities of the Dodecanese, without whose support most of Anoiktes Portes, both now and in previous years, could not have been realized. We would like thank for the support the Monitoring Committee of the Monuments of the Medieval Town of Rhodes.
